India and Israel to Develop Institutional Framework to Deepen Defence Ties

NEW DELHI, July 23 — In a significant step towards bolstering bilateral strategic cooperation, India and Israel have agreed to work on establishing an institutional framework aimed at deepening defence ties between the two nations. The decision was reached during a high-level bilateral meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The Indian delegation was led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, while the Israeli side was represented by Major General (Res.) Amir Baram, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Defence. This interaction marks a continued momentum in the defence partnership, which has grown steadily over the past decades, particularly in areas such as defence technology, intelligence sharing, and joint military development.

According to an official statement released by the Indian Ministry of Defence, both sides “concurred to work towards developing an institutional framework for further deepening of defence ties.” The emphasis will be on creating structured, long-term mechanisms that will guide collaboration in emerging defence technologies, innovation ecosystems, joint research, and defence production.

Strengthening Strategic Partnership

India and Israel share a multi-dimensional strategic partnership that includes cooperation in security, counter-terrorism, cyber defence, space, and arms manufacturing. Over the years, Israel has emerged as one of India’s top defence suppliers, providing advanced military hardware including drones, radar systems, and missile technologies.

The latest talks reflect the mutual intention of both countries to move beyond traditional buyer-seller dynamics and to establish a collaborative, future-focused relationship. Officials also hinted at plans for joint defence industrial ventures, knowledge exchange, and greater synergy between private and public sectors in both countries.

Focus on Long-Term Vision

Officials familiar with the meeting noted that the discussions were not just about immediate procurement or joint exercises, but were focused on a long-term strategic vision. “The intent is to build a roadmap that ensures sustained engagement and technological co-development that serves mutual defence interests,” a senior defence official said.

Major General Baram’s visit comes at a time when regional and global security dynamics are rapidly evolving. Both India and Israel are looking to enhance their self-reliance in defence manufacturing while building alliances that strengthen national security and preparedness.

Background: India-Israel Defence Relations

The defence relationship between India and Israel has been one of the cornerstones of their bilateral ties since the establishment of full diplomatic relations in 1992. Over the past few years, this relationship has expanded with increasing military exchanges, joint training exercises, and participation in defence expos.

India’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives have also opened new opportunities for Israeli companies to collaborate with Indian defence manufacturers, fostering an environment of innovation and co-development.

Looking Ahead

With both countries agreeing to develop an institutional structure, the future of India-Israel defence cooperation appears more structured and resilient. The framework is expected to enhance coordination at the policy level, enable seamless defence collaboration, and build trust through regular dialogue and joint initiatives.

As global geopolitics continue to shift, such strategic partnerships based on shared interests and capabilities are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining regional stability and technological edge.
