Op Sindoor, Trump’s Ceasefire Claims on Agenda as Monsoon Session Begins Today

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Centre is open to discussing any issue of national importance, including Operation Sindoor.

On Sunday, the Centre signalled its willingness to discuss Operation Sindoor in Parliament and potentially respond to former US President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. This came as Opposition parties pushed for answers in an all-party meeting ahead of the monsoon session.

Operation Sindoor, India’s direct military retaliation following the Pahalgam terror attack, will be a key point of discussion. The Congress, Samajwadi Party, Left parties, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) demanded a debate. Even NDA ally Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde supported the idea.

Congress sought a reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on both the military operation and Trump’s controversial remarks. Gaurav Gogoi said the Prime Minister should address the nation from Parliament, adding that Trump’s statement questions India’s dignity and the valor of its armed forces.

It remains uncertain whether PM Modi will respond directly. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh may make a detailed statement instead.

Rijiju clarified that the government would respond appropriately once discussions are held, and the BAC (Business Advisory Committee) would decide the schedule.

The government is expected to highlight Operation Sindoor’s success, including the destruction of terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK, framing it as a “new normal” in India’s counter-terror approach. In contrast, the Opposition will question the government over intelligence lapses and Trump’s claims.

Additional concerns to be raised include the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, with the Opposition alleging it could disenfranchise voters. BJP and the Election Commission argue it helps remove ineligible entries.

NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule also brought up the contentious issue of Hindi imposition in Maharashtra.

The government plans to table 17 bills during this session and has urged for smooth cooperation from the Opposition. The session will run until August 21. BJP president JP Nadda was also present at the all-party meeting.
