Trump Downplays Sending Long-Range Weapons to Ukraine Amid Russian Offensive

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday softened expectations of sending long-range weapons to Ukraine, saying, “We’re not looking to do that,” despite increasing Russian air attacks and Kyiv’s hopes for more military aid.

This statement comes a day after Trump threatened Russia with steep tariffs unless President Vladimir Putin ends the conflict within 50 days. He also proposed selling U.S. weapons to NATO allies, who would then supply Ukraine.

While some U.S. and Ukrainian officials believe long-range weapons could pressure Russia into peace talks, lawmakers have voiced concern that the 50-day deadline gives Putin time to seize more territory. Senators Thom Tillis and Jeanne Shaheen warned of the risks of delay.

Trump dismissed concerns about the timeline, hinting he could act sooner if necessary. Meanwhile, bipartisan Senate legislation is pushing for even harsher sanctions — including a 500% tariff on imports from countries buying Russian energy — although Trump said a 100% tariff would be sufficient.

Despite his shifting stance on Russia, Trump maintained a neutral position in the conflict, saying, “I’m on nobody’s side. My concern is for humanity.”

U.S. officials are reviewing Ukraine’s weapons requests, including air defenses and long-range missiles, with new plans for NATO allies to supply arms and later replenish their stockpiles with American-made replacements.
