200 Previously Unknown Species Discovered in Pacific Deep-Sea Vent Ecosystem

At 4,000 metres beneath the Pacific, researchers found a hydrothermal vent community so biologically distinct it may require a new branch of the tree of life.

OCEAN
The ROV Nereid captured the first images of the Prometheus Field vent system.

The vent field, named the Prometheus Field, spans approximately 12 square kilometres and supports a biological community of extraordinary density and diversity. Preliminary analysis has identified at least 217 species new to science.
